A Dubai salary is hard to compare with pay elsewhere. No income tax is deducted from it and, for expatriates from outside the GCC, no pension or social security contribution either. But allowances such as housing do not count toward your end-of-service gratuity. Here is what the 2026 pay data shows, and the parts of an offer that matter more than the headline.
The short answer
Recruiter salary guides give the clearest picture for professional jobs. Michael Page’s UAE Salary Guide 2026 lists more than 500 roles, and more than 60 percent of their starting salaries fall between AED 10,000 and 40,000 a month. The top 10 percent start at AED 70,000 or more. These are UAE-wide figures for professional roles, not an average for all workers.
In that guide, banking and financial services pays the most, with an average of AED 53,020 a month, and the guide’s top salary, AED 130,000, goes to a managing director in the same sector. For software engineers, the average in Dubai job ads on Indeed is AED 6,131 a month (118 salaries, September 2026).
For expatriates from outside the GCC, all of it is free of income tax and of pension or social security contributions.
What each sector pays
| Sector and role | Monthly pay, AED (source) |
|---|---|
| Technology, software engineer | 6,131 on average (Indeed, 118 salaries) |
| Finance, financial analyst | 8,700 on average (Indeed, 65 salaries) |
| Finance, finance manager | 12,221 on average (Indeed, 341 salaries) |
| Banking and financial services, all roles in the guide | 53,020 on average, top salary 130,000 for a managing director (Michael Page, UAE-wide) |
| Healthcare, registered ward nurse | 5,000 to 9,000 (Health Bridge) |
| Healthcare, ICU, emergency or theatre nurse | 7,000 to 15,000 (Health Bridge) |
| Healthcare, nurse on a Western-recruited contract at a premium hospital | 12,000 to 20,000+ plus housing (Health Bridge) |
| Healthcare, consultant doctor | 60,000 to 100,000, more for senior consultants and heads of department (Health Bridge) |
| Construction, site engineer and civil engineer | 4,937 and 4,831 on average (Indeed, about 1,200 and 1,600 salaries) |
| Project director | 35,301 on average (Indeed, only 20 salaries) |
The Indeed figures are averages of the salaries in Dubai job ads posted on Indeed over the past 36 months, read in September 2026, and Indeed notes that pay varies with experience and employer. Michael Page’s figures cover the whole UAE. Health Bridge Medical Services presents its figures as indicative ranges and market estimates, updated in July 2026 for nurses and in August 2026 for doctors.
Where you sit in a range depends mostly on experience, qualifications and the employer. The recruitment route can matter too: Health Bridge notes that nurses hired on Western contracts into premium facilities often get the higher packages. UAE labour law bans discrimination on grounds of nationality, including between jobs with the same functions, so if an offer is well below what others in the same role earn, ask why before you accept.

The package matters more than the salary
A Dubai offer is usually split into basic salary plus allowances. That split is not cosmetic. On the mainland, end-of-service gratuity, the lump sum you receive when you leave, is due only once you have completed at least a year of continuous service, and it is calculated on your last basic salary, without allowances such as housing or transport. A package that is 40 percent basic and 60 percent allowances looks generous and pays a much smaller gratuity.
In the DIFC, the gratuity for expatriate employees was replaced in 2020 by the DEWS savings plan, with monthly contributions that are also a percentage of basic wage. Either way, what you take away at the end depends on the basic figure.
| Component | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Basic salary | Your mainland gratuity, and your DEWS contributions in the DIFC, are calculated on this figure alone, so a low basic is expensive on exit |
| Housing allowance | Check how your salary certificate shows it. For family sponsorship, ICP asks for an employment certificate showing your monthly income and housing provision, and a minimum income of AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 if your employer provides housing |
| Schooling allowance | Frequently capped per child or in total. Two children can exceed a generous-sounding cap |
| Annual flights | Number of tickets, for whom, and whether it is cash or booked travel |
| Health insurance | Yours is compulsory in Dubai, and your employer must pay for it without deducting the cost from your salary. Ask whether dependants are included |
| Notice period | Cuts both ways, and matters more here because your visa is tied to the job |
For family sponsorship, the lower AED 3,000 figure applies when your employer provides housing and your employment certificate shows it. The official pages we checked do not say how a cash housing allowance is treated, so check your salary certificate with GDRFA or an Amer centre before you apply. See our visa guide for the thresholds.
What to negotiate, in order of value
Most people negotiate the headline number and accept everything else. That is usually the wrong order.
- The basic-to-allowance split. Raising the basic raises your gratuity for every year you stay. It is not free for your employer, though: overtime, where it applies, is paid on the basic wage, and employers in MoHRE’s voluntary Savings Scheme or the DIFC’s DEWS plan pay a monthly percentage of basic salary.
- Schooling cap, if you have children. With two or more children, a total cap can leave a large share of the fees unpaid, so compare the cap with the actual fees of the schools you are considering.
- Dependant health cover. Ask whether your family can join the company group scheme and who pays for it. In Dubai, employers are encouraged to cover dependants. If yours does not, you must insure them as their sponsor.
- Notice period and probation terms. Worth clarifying while you have leverage rather than when you want to leave.
- The headline salary. Still worth pushing, but it is the item they expect you to push and the one with least slack.
Who is actually hiring
The Hays GCC Salary Guide 2026 surveyed more than 1,600 employers and professionals in the region. Two-thirds of the employers said they increased headcount in 2025, with the most recruitment in the UAE and Saudi Arabia and growth in technology, banking, construction, property, transport and logistics (Khaleej Times, 14 January 2026). Those answers describe 2025, before the regional war that began on 28 February 2026, so check current openings in your own field. On pay, banking and financial services has the highest average salary in Michael Page’s UAE Salary Guide 2026.
Healthcare pay depends heavily on the role: Health Bridge puts a consultant doctor at AED 60,000 to 100,000 a month and a ward nurse at AED 5,000 to 9,000. The gap between junior and senior roles is wide elsewhere too. Indeed’s Dubai averages are under AED 5,000 a month for site and civil engineers, against about AED 35,000 for a project director, although that last figure rests on only 20 salaries.
Beyond the salary, remember what the absence of income tax does to a comparison. A gross offer here is close to a net offer elsewhere, which is the point of our guide to the tax system. Set that against the numbers in our cost of living guide before you decide whether an offer is good.
Reading a Dubai contract
On the mainland, job offers and contracts follow MoHRE’s standard contract and are registered with the ministry, and any clause that gives you less than the Labour Law is void. The DIFC, a special economic zone in Dubai, has its own employment rules. Three clauses deserve real attention.
- The probation period, which can last up to six months. During it, your employer can end the contract with 14 days’ written notice, which is shorter and less protective than the notice that applies afterwards
- The contract end date and notice period. Under the UAE Labour Law, contracts are now fixed-term (older unlimited contracts had to be converted), and the notice period must be 30 to 90 days, the same for both sides unless a difference favours you
- Any non-compete clause, its geographic scope and its duration. The law allows one only if your job gives you access to the employer’s clients or business secrets, caps it at two years after the contract ends, and exempts you if the contract ends during probation or your employer ends it in breach of the law. In a court dispute, the employer must prove the damage
The offer you accept becomes your contract. It is attached to the application for your work permit, which MoHRE issues, and once you arrive, you and your employer sign it and it is registered with MoHRE as your employment contract. After that, your employer cannot change its terms without your consent, and only within the law. If the document you are asked to sign on arrival differs from the offer you accepted, raise it before you sign.
Questions we get asked
- Is the salary really tax-free?
- Yes, for personal income. There is no income tax on salaries, dividends or capital gains, and expatriates from outside the GCC pay no pension or social security contributions. A 9 percent corporate tax applies to taxable company profits above AED 375,000, which does not touch an employee’s pay.
- What is end-of-service gratuity?
- A lump sum paid when your employment ends. For expatriates on the mainland it is due after at least a year of continuous service: 21 days of your last basic salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after that, capped at two years’ pay. In the DIFC, the gratuity was replaced in 2020 by the DEWS savings plan, whose contributions are also based on basic salary. That is why the basic-to-allowance split in your offer matters far more than it appears to.
- Do I need a job before I move?
- It is by far the easiest route, because your employer sponsors your residence visa and pays for your health cover. A Green Visa removes the need for a sponsor, but you still have to qualify. Skilled workers need a valid UAE employment contract in a job at MoHRE skill level 1 to 3, a bachelor’s degree and a salary of at least AED 15,000 a month. Freelancers need a MoHRE freelance or self-employment permit, a degree or specialised diploma, and at least AED 360,000 a year of freelance income over the previous two years. Investors and business partners need proof of their investment in a UAE business and the licences that go with it.
- Can I negotiate after accepting?
- Very little. The offer letter feeds directly into the work permit application, so the terms harden quickly. Negotiate before you sign, not after.
